Raka Ghirra seeks discharge of bribery case

Punjab Police Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Raka Ghirra on Thursday moved an application seeking discharge from the case to a Special CBI court.

The counsel for the defense claim that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has no jurisdiction to register a case or investigate without the sanction of the state government.

The case has been adjourned to November 21. The CBI has been notified to reply to the same by then.

According to SPS Bhullar, counsel for the DSP, "It is wrong on the part of the CBI to lay a trap to arrest the DSP who is serving in the Punjab Police without a notification from the concerned state authority".

However, the counsel for CBI, Manmohan Sharma said, "The illegal gratification was being taken by the DSP concerning an issue of the UT".

Earlier, Raka Ghirra was charge-sheeted with criminal conspiracy and also under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

In July 2011, when Raka Ghirra was posted as DSP in Mohali, she was caught from her residence in Sector 15 by the anti-corruption branch of CBI for accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh.

The CBI sleuths had laid a trap at her residence on the complaint of a builder, namely Krishna Kumar Malhotra. The builder had alleged that the DSP demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from him so as to settle an investigation in the complaint against Krishna Kumar Malhotra in a land dispute case in Mullanpur village.
