Ramesh loses temper, bout and Commonwealth spot

Little over a year ago,Ramesh Kumar made history by bagging a bronze at the World Wrestling Championships,India’s first medal in the event after a gap of 32 years. He will not be able to repeat the feat – or better it – at this year’s edition in the Russia next month, largely due to his tantrum throwing at the selection trials on Sunday that saw him forfeiting his bouts after a controversy. It also put paid to his chances of participating the Commonwealth Games, with Sumit of Delhi bagging the 74kg freestyle spot in the October event. India’s representative at the worlds will be Narsingh Yadav of Railways, who was leading Ramesh in the first bout.

Up against a young pretender,Yadav, the 28-year-old got worked up,and walked off in protest. Yadav had replaced an injured Kumar for the weight category during the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship, and won a gold. This was an opportunity for the latter to take his rightful place in the team, but it wasn’t to be.

After losing the first round, and trailing by a margin of over four points in the next,he left in between after venting his frustration out at the referee. Later, when the grappler failed to show up for his next bout against Sumit,in the process also conceding his chance for a Commonwealth Games berth.

“Ramesh didn’t even finish second in his weight category. So he wouldn’t be part of either of the teams,” Wrestling Federation of India president,GS Mander told The Indian Express. But Kumar had a different take on the matter. “The referee did a bad job. I use to score points, they kept awarding him. It’s a CWG trial event not a state-level tournament. Despite all my objections, not once the video referrals was sought by the officials,” Kumar said.

Asked about his no show in his next bout,Kumar added: “I didn’t feel like coming. I knew these guys would have done the same to me the second time around.”

Mander, however, rubbished his claims saying the referring was fair.

“He is saying all this because he lost. I was there. Why will we stop a world championship medal winner from making the team?” he said. Interestingly,Yadav also lost his bout against another youngster,Sumit, who trains at the Chhatrasal stadium. Meanwhile,Sushil Kumar earned his right to represent India in the 66kg category, after both Pradeep and Naresh conceded their bouts on Sunday.
