A group of over 200 students of United College of Engineering & Research went on rampage on Wednesday morning, torching over half-a-dozen vehicles in the campus and damaging glasses and furniture of the building in the Industrial Area of Allahabad.

The Allahabad DIG,Braj Bhushan said the violence was a sequel to the protest over death of a student — Sanjay Gupta.

A fourth-year BTech student,Sanjay had undergone a minor surgery on one of his legs last week and died on Tuesday. According to the students,he had sought leave to go home on medical grounds, but the college administration denied it,the DIG said. Sanjay was also forced to attend classes even when he was unable to walk properly. He had a high fever for last three days, but the administration did not extend any medical help either, the students alleged.

The youth’s father had got him admitted at the Hayat nursing home in Naini, where he died around 11.30 am.

The authorities had paid Rs 5 lakh to Sanjay’s father,Shiv Chandra, after the students had blocked the road outside the college demanding a refund of the fee deposited, the DIG said.

The issue erupted again around 9.30 am on Wednesday when the students gathered to attend the assembly. They started raising slogans against the administration demanding action against a few faculty members, alleging harassment. The violence began soon after. A group of students set three cars of faculty members and four parked two-wheelers on fire. Others stormed into the office and classrooms and began wrecking furniture and glass, the DIG said.

The police rushed in and chased away the students, who were then involved in pelting stones at window glasses and doors. The Station Officer (SO) of Industrial Area police station,Ajay Seth, said they talked to the students in presence of senior college authorities. The college authorities, however, denied over the allegations and claimed Sanjay had not sought leave,Seth said. The administration had not filed a complaint regarding the violence till late evening,he added.
