There was panic in Gultekdi area for some time on Saturday after three men went on a rampage and smashed the windshields of 15 auto-rickshaws and a tempo following a row over parking charges on a street near Meenatai Thackeray Vasahat.
The row started between two parking attendants who manage parking spaces on opposite sides of the street.
Acting on a complaint by Tanaji Govind Gaikwad (33), a resident of Meenatai Thackeray Vasahat, the Swargate police have booked Rajesh Sakharam More (26) his friend Akram Aziz Shaikh (22) and Akram's father Hirya alias Aziz Shaikh (45).
While More and Akram have been arrested, Akram's father, who police said is a historysheeter, is on the run. Police have launched a search for him.
Police said the incident took place following a dispute between More and complainant Gaikwad. They manage vehicle parking on opposite sides of the street near Meenatai Thackeray Vasahat.
Police said Gaikwad collects Rs 5 per day from auto-rickshaws and tempo drivers for parking their vehicles and standing guard over them. For the same work, More charges Rs 10 per day.
More allegedly roped in his friend Akram's father Hirya to ask Gaikwad to charge Rs 10 per day per vehicle. Hirya not only asked Gaikwad to raise the parking charge, but also demanded Rs 200 per day from Gaikwad as 'hafta', said the complaint.
Gaikwad refused to oblige. This angered Hirya, who accompanied by Akram and More, returned to the place armed with an iron rod and smashed the glasses of 15 auto-rickshaws and a tempo which was on the parking space managed by Gaikwad.
The incident led to panic in Gultekdi area for some time. Senior police officers including assistant commissioner Vasant Sonwane, and senior inspector Ram Pathare rushed to the spot. Additional police force was deployed in Gultekdi area to avoid any further flare-ups.
