Bengal players celebrate the fall of Maharashtra’s last wicket during the match at Poona Club Grounds on Tuesday.

Maharashtra middle order batsman Ganesh Gaikwad struck the stumps in frustration after getting out caught behind to Ashok Dinda of Bengal.

This transgression was an example of the disappointment of the entire Maharashtra team as they were bowled out cheaply for 179 runs by a disciplined bowling attack on the opening day of the four-day Elite Division Ranji Trophy match at Poona Club cricket ground on Tuesday.

The morning session was dominated by some expert bowling by Ranadeb Bose, who ran through the top order. Harshad Khadiwale, Rohan Bhonsale, Ameya Shrikhande and Kedar Jadhav all fell to Bose and Maharashtra were reeling at 53/4 at one stage.

Good contributions by Azhar Ansari (52 runs) and Sangram Atitkar (44 runs) gave the Maharashtra total some respectability, but Ashok Dinda cleaned out the tail with three quick wickets and Maharashtra ended the first innings with a score of 179 runs at tea.

Bengal hit a speed bump at the start of the final session when veteran opener Deep Dasgupta was caught in front of the wicket by Sajin Sureshnath in the second over of the innings.

Arindam Das and Wriddhiman Saha then steadied the ship with a solid 42 run partnership before Das fell to the bowling of Azhar Ansari for a well crafted 38. Saha and new batsman Manoj Tiwary then added 9 runs to the total, finishing at 52/2 at stumps.

Maharashtra coach Shaun Williams said, “The top four batsmen played bad shots. Most of our batsmen did not apply themselves well today and I am disappointed. We were not patient and may have still been in the T20 frame of mind. We are sure to bounce back,” he said.
