The Punjab State Scheduled Caste Commission has decided to reopen the case of a minor Dalit girl,of Ramuwala Kalan village, who was allegedly raped by some villagers in August 2008. The victim gave birth to a girl in April this year.
Though a case was registered by the Moga police at the Mehna police station in April,it was later closed after the parents of the victims said they did not want to pursue it. They had also refused to identify the culprits.
Dalip Singh Pandhi, member of the Commission, said since the girl was minor the case could not be closed by the police or any other agency.
It is the duty of the district administration to pursue the case and find out if there has been any political pressures to close the case, he added.
The commission has asked Director General of Police Paramdip Singh Gill to send the file of this case to them to conduct an independent investigation.
The DGP has assured that the police will conduct DNA tests of the victims baby and the suspects, including son of a local Congress leader whose name figured during the initial inquiry, he added.
