Raped for five months in south Delhi,Uzbek sisters have nowhere to go

Sisters were lured by a woman who offered them a job and then forced into flesh trade.

When they headed to India from Uzbekistan, they were tourists. The holiday turned into a five-month ordeal for the two Uzbek sisters as they were forced into flesh trade in Vasant Kunj,South Delhi. Even now, after they have managed to escape and approach police, their ordeal is far from over.

Concerned about their deteriorating health, with one of them being pregnant,Delhi Police wrote to the Uzbekistan Embassy,Delhi Commission for Women and Foreigner’s Regional Registration (FRRO),requesting them to rehabilitate the women. But,no one has come forward to take the responsibility.

The sisters were lured by a woman who offered them a job. She took their passports and held them captive for five months. They were forced into flesh trade and were beaten up mercilessly when they refused to oblige. Without money, proper food, clothes or any medical aid, they stayed in a tiny room, hoping to escape one day.

Despite managing to escape, freedom still eludes them as they are trapped in a foreign country with no one willing to make arrangements to send them back home.

A senior police officer said: “We first sent them to a child care home, but they could not stay there for more than two days. Later, they were sent to another home managed by the Delhi government, but it is becoming very difficult for them to live there. They have no money,no clothes and the food and water does not suit them. The pregnant woman’s condition is deteriorating and the required medical aid is not available here.”

According to sources, the women were also provided counselling, but that was of no help due to the language barrier. “Communication is a problem as they cannot understand the language. All they say is that they want to go home. Their mother is in Uzbekistan and father is bedridden. They throw up whatever they eat,and their health is deteriorating by the day. The doctor told us that the two women were raped for over five months, which has led to severe pain in lower abdomen. They need care and nutrition,” a police officer said.

The women are suffering from acute depression and the trauma might complicate their health even further, the officer said.

The authorities at the shelter for women have told police to move the sisters elsewhere. Police sources said since the food at the home does not suit them, police personnel have been delivering all three meals to the home for them.

Police are still awaiting a response from several authorities that they had written to for help, while the sisters are struggling to live each day.
