Rare fish on display at Ruia College from November 2

More than 500 species of rare and exotic fish from all over the world will be displayed as part of an exhibition Aqua Life at Ruia College in Matunga starting November 2.

Organised by the Central Institute of Fisheries Education and Laukik Creation, the exhibition is aimed at creating awareness about aquatic biodiversity, especially among students. After a good response in May, organisers said the exhibition has returned to Mumbai with more exotic species. "This time we have brought species that even hobbyists may have not seen. These are very rare to find, at least in India," said Laukik Soman, organiser of the event.

Housed in 110 tanks, the fish will include both freshwater and marine species. Besides attractions such as piranhas, which are meat-eating fish, and sting rays that are known to sting in self-defense, other interesting species on display will be snakehead fish, which looks similar to a python, and catfish, which have barbels that look like cat whiskers.

Among some visually appealing species on display will be diamond angelfish, a freshwater fish that is called so because its scales sparkle like gems, lionfish — a venomous marine fish with red, black and white bands, flame angelfish — which is bright-orange coloured marine fish with vertical black bars — and sergeant major fish, called so because the stripes on its sides are similar to a sergeant major's badge.
