  • West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Saturday said he would be meeting Ratan Tata soon to discuss the Singur imbrogliio. Addressing a student’s rally in Kolkata, Bhattacharjee said: “I had written to the Tatas. I have received their letter today. In the letter Ratan Tata has said he wants to talk to me. I have said yes to that.” The Chief Minister, however, did not divulge when Ratan Tata is expected to be in Kolkata.

Lambasting the Opposition for the continuing stand-off in Singur, Bhattacharjee said if the situation continues it would become difficult to hold back the Tatas from leaving West Bengal.

“I am trying my best to see that the Tatas stay. But they (the Opposition) are pulling down walls, pelting stones and threatening the staff there. Is it possible to carry out any kind of work under these circumstances? If they decide to leave, who will shoulder the responsibility? The Opposition will be blamed for betraying the people of West Bengal,” said Bhattacharjee. “We are not bothered about the Tatas or the Birlas. All we want is to ensure jobs for 6,000 youths,” he added.

He urged the youth to stir up a campaign in cities and villages in support of industrialisation. “We need industries in West Bengal. We have to take the path of industrialisation if we have to progress. The Opposition is saying no to everything—be it the power projects in Katwa or the widening of national highways. Who will decide whether there has to be industrialisation or not, the Trinamool Congress or the new generation?” Bhattacharjee asked.

He also ruled out the possibility of handing over 300 acres land to the unwilling farmers. “I asked her (Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee) whether she wants the factory or not. The bickering over 300 acres will not help. It will not be possible to set up the factory then. If she wants the factory to stay, she has to accept the package announced by the Government,” said Bhattacharjee.
