Having already stripped him of his police medal, the Centre on Wednesday decided to withhold his pension "in full on permanent basis".

"Pension of S P S Rathore, a retired IPS officer of the 1965 batch, has been withheld in full on permanent basis. The Central Government has taken the action following his conviction by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandigarh, vide orders dated 21st December 2009 in the molestation case of Ms. Ruchika, a minor girl," the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Wednesday.

"After consulting the UPSC, penalty has been imposed on the retired police officer under the rules that are applicable to the IPS cadre. So they have permanently withdrawn the pension," Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said.

Rathore is presently serving a 18-month jail term in Chandigarh after his punishment was enhanced by a Sessions court. He has moved a review petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court and also sought bail on medical grounds.

Ruchika, a budding tennis player, had committed suicide three years after being molested by Rathore on August 12, 1990.
