Rats have become the new menace for several MC projects and the increase in rodents’ population has more to do with human act of not disposing of the garbage in a proper manner.

The matter came to light after after a portion of Jagraon bridge from Vishwakarma Chowk caved in.

The engineers who inspected the site found that garbage was being dumped on one side of the bridge that attracted the rodents. The rats not only fed on the garbage but also started digging the bridge wall that led to the footpath to cave in.

Earlier reports of damage on an elevated road is now being blamed on rats. Senior Deputy Mayor Parveen Bansal said: “The garbage has led to the damage and we have started repair works.” The MC teams are also being pulled up for not monitoring the cleanliness of flyovers and bridges. Sources revealed that MC is planning to consults experts on how to tackle the increase in rat population.
