Red alert in Assam as flood situation turns grim

An alert has been sounded in Lakhimpur,Dhemaji,Sonitpur,Jorhat and Majuli.The National Disaster Rescue Force has been called for rescue operations.

Heavy rain in catchment areas of the Brahmaputra River at the foothills of the Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh has led flood Assam to declare a red alert in anticipation of floods.

An alert has been sounded in Lakhimpur,Dhemaji,Sonitpur,Jorhat and Majuli.The National Disaster Rescue Force has been called for rescue operations.

According to official sources,over two lakh people in nearly 300 villages have been affected by the overflowing river.

In Majuli,an embankment was breached at Nayabazaar flooding Jengraimukh,Fuloni,Halodiati,Kherkotamukh and Nayabazaar areas.

In Lakhimpur,a 100-metre stretch of geo-fabric embankment was breached at Matmora affecting nearly 200 villages.

East Dhakuakhana,Matmora,Kherkota,Dangdhara,Dimoruguri,Kekuri and Dholpata were also submerged by floods.

Over 30,000 people have been displaced in the upper Majuli area. Offices,schools and other establishments in Majuli have been inundated with floodwaters.
