Red chilli banned in jail canteen

After Monday's jail-break attempt by eight hardcore prisoners, the jail authorities have banned availability of red chilli in the jail canteen.

The authorities realised that the prisoners had put red chilli powder in the eyes of head warden Balwinder Singh so as to snatch the keys from him. Even in the past as well a number of such incidents have happened in which red chilli powder was used by the prisoners to escape from the jail.

Manjit Singh Kalra, jail superintendent, Borstel Jail, confirmed the development. "The red chilli which comes with ration remains in the store which is used for cooking purposes. At times, prisoners also used to do cooking on their own and they used to buy red chilli powder from the canteen. From now onwards, if prisoners are found using red chilli, the accountability will be of the store keeper," he said.

Kalra added, "The head warden fought bravely with the eight prisoners and was the key person in foiling the jail- break attempt. We have recommended appreciation award for his efforts."

A meeting will be held with the senior jail officials to take more tough decisions.
