Red Cross workers held for selling fake papers

Two regular employees of the UT Red Cross Society (RCS) have been served showcause notices after they were found to be invovled in a scam that included selling photocopies of forms meant for driving licenses, registration certificates and arms licenses.

Four others, who worked as sales persons at four different government offices on a contract basis, have had their jobs terminated and their contract cancelled. The four worked at the UT Estate Office, SDM (east) office, SDM (south) office and the Registering and Licensing Authority, from where they procured photocopies of the forms.

Inspection of the fours offices where the men worked revealed that the forms sold by the men did not bear the serial numbers which are present on printed forms.

The role of the two regular employees of RCS after an inquiry was conducted by a four-member team constituted on the orders of Red Cross Secretary, Parshuram V Kavle. Senior clerk Ravinder Verma and Accountant Jyoti Khanal were responsible for releasing the forms to the sales persons and maintaining a record of the sales made.

Deputy commissioner Mohammad Shayin recently issued show cause notices to the regular employees for taking disciplinary action for dereliction of duty.

Further, it has been recommended, that alternative arrangements be made for sale of forms — clearly mentioning the procedure to be adopted for supplying the forms by the Society to the said salesmen — as well as a system of collection of receipt from them to be deposited in the accounts without delay.

Simultaneously, the printing firm, based in Mohali, which was entrusted with the responsibility of printing the forms and booklets for the UT Red Cross Society, was also found violating the terms and conditions of the work allotted to them by pocketing the amount for the forms which they never provided. It has been decided not to extend their contract further.
