Refinery diplomacy

  • Myanmar’s No 2 man, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, who was in India last week, had one special request for the Indian Government. While his staff ensured that he got the usual dose of India’s IT and space prowess in Bangalore and a trip to Bodh Gaya, Maung Aye wanted to see the “world’s largest refinery”. Given Myanmar’s own quest to exploit its oil resources, Maung Aye wanted to visit Reliance’s Jamnagar facility, technically the world’s largest greenfield refinery. New Delhi, for once, did not waste time on protocol and the visit was squeezed in for the Myanmar top general, who is expected to be the next head of state. Maung Aye also had a closed-door conversation with Army Chief Deepak Kapoor during his visit. Reliable sources say military supplies were discussed at length as Yangon pushed India to at least work on non-lethal military items.
