Chandigarh is a landlocked city and the lack of availability of adequate land is one of the major concerns being addressed by the Master Plan. Rehabilitation of slum dwellers has been going on for the past several decades. In the 1970s and 80s, it was said that 8,000 houses would be sufficient to tackle the problem of slums. While a large number of houses under the rehabilitation scheme were constructed, these proved to be insufficient and the problem of slums continued. Instead of single-storey houses that were given, these have become triple-storey. The construction was regularised. In the year 2006, a fresh survey was conducted and 23,841 families were identified who were to be given houses. Of these, half the tenements have been constructed and the remaining would be completed in the coming days.
