Renuka Dam in troubled waters

The National Green Tribunal has stayed the land acquisition process and the construction work of the Rs 3600 crore Renuka Dam project coming up in Himachal Pradesh with an aim to met additional demand of potable water for Delhi.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stayed the land acquisition process and the construction work of the Rs 3600 crore Renuka Dam project coming up in Himachal Pradesh with an aim to met additional demand of potable water for Delhi.

The move come after the Himachal Pradesh government has already washed its hands of the project.

Earlier last year, the Union environment ministry had refused to give the go-ahead to the project on the grounds that it would lead to felling of a very large number of trees.

The project, which is expected to generate 40 MW power for Himachal Pradesh, was being executed by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation,a fully owned agency of the state government. The National Green Tribunal (NGT),which was hearing environment related petition filed by one Durga Ram,a local resident, stopped further work at the project.
