Researcher,guide still in Naxal custody,‘safe’

The spokesperson said the duo will be released only after confirming that Juhi’s mobile phone does not have any information about the Naxals.

Research scholar Juhi Tyagi and her guide Pradip Kumar Das continued to be in Maoist captivity on Thursday evening, with a spokesperson of the rebels assuring that they will not be harmed. The spokesperson said the duo will be released only after confirming that Juhi’s mobile phone does not have any information about the Naxals.

Juhi,24,a resident of Bangalore and pursuing PhD in sociology at New York’s Stony Brook University, and Pradip,18,were reportedly held hostage by Naxals in Jamui jungle. The Maoist spokesperson told reporters that they were “alarmed at finding additional chips” in Juhi’s mobile phone and needed to check if it had any secret information on them. Juhi, who switched on her mobile phone Thursday afternoon, confirmed her safety to the media. However, since evening, her mobile was out of reach. It is learnt that the rebels had changed their location.

Over a dozen reporters waited for her return at Garhi dam,35 km from Jamui,on Thursday,as there was confirmation about Juhi leaving the Naxal hideout for Jamui. A Naxal spokesperson, however, told the media that they would talk about ‘release’ only on Friday.

The police have neither started a combing operation nor approached the CRPF stationed at Jamui and Nawada to help track Juhi, who has been visiting the area for studying the Maoists and tribals since 2009.

Bihar DGP Neelmani said,“The so-called kidnapping of research scholar Juhi Tyagi in Jamui by Naxals is under circulation. Close relatives of the girl and guide have denied kidnapping and have been in regular touch with her.” He said Juhi has been working with the Naxals and tribals for some time and this is her third visit to the area. “On earlier occasions, too, she stayed in Naxal area for 15-20 days,” he added.

Jamui Superintendent of Police Ramnarain Singh said,“We know for sure that she is safe. We are not taking any action as of now.”
