Retd Army Major suffers from mania, says family

Retired army major, H C Sharma, who is allegedly involved in a child sex abuse case, had been suffering from mania and had quarreled with his fellow army officials during his posting at Yol cantonment in Himachal Pradesh.

The retired major, who was remanded to one more day of police custody by a local court here, had also been fighting with his family members and had even run away from PGI, where he had earlier been admitted for the mental disorder.

Family members of the retired major told The Indian Express on Saturday that he had been living for more than four years at Sector 12 in Panchkula separately from them, as after the mental disorder surfaced, his behaviour had become odd. A family member said that the retired major would keep the television set on for long hours in the night and would keep them awake, due to which he had shifted to a rented accommodation where he was living alone. His brother-in-law, P K Kalia, said that the retired major had however been falsely framed in the case of child sex abuse.

According to family members, the retired major developed his mania during the war between the Sri Lankan army and the LTTE in the neighbouring country. Following this, he was admitted to an air force hospital in Bangalore, but his condition did not improve.

Sharma also had altercations with his fellow army officials during his posting at Yol cantonment in Chandigarh and was discharged prematurely from service due to his behaviour. His family members said that after the army major was relieved from the Sri Lankan war, the Army Medical Board passed a decision that he cannot work without supervision.

The Station House Officer of the Sector 5 police station, Deepak Kumar, said that they have taken a police remand in the case. The police is also trying to find out whether he filmed the rape scenes and later passed them to other people from his mobile and has sought the call details from him for this.
