An ongoing film festival celebrates Kamal Haasans 50 years in cinema
Seven months ago,Kamal Haasans name was absent when the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF) organised a retrospective at IFFI,Goa,as a tribute to actors and directors who had spent 50 years in cinema. Now,DFF has organised a separate show for Haasan called 50 years in cinema at Siri Fort. Neither Haasan nor any DFF official wanted to comment on whether the ongoing festival is to make up for ignoring the former at IFFI.
Haasan,55,specially flew down from Italy where he is shooting for the Tamil film Manmadhan Ambu, directed by KS Ravi Kumarto attend the opening ceremony on Friday. Haasan was accompanied by Telugu star Gouthami, who was, incidentally, referred to as Mrs Kamal Haasan by the Director of the DFF,SM Khan, during the introductions.
The retrospective opened with Hey Ram ,which Haasan had directed and produced as well as played the critically acclaimed lead role in. I dont regard myself as a star. Its because of the early grounding I received from my acting gurus that I do not gloat about my awards, said Haasan, before recalling the first time he had come to Delhi at the age of five to receive the National Award for Best Child Artiste for the Tamil film,Kalathur Kannamma. The three-day event, which ends today, comprises seven prominent works in Tamil and Telugu cinema. Among these are Anbe Sivam,Virumaandi and Thevar Magan, which have already been screened. Sagara Sangamam,Dasavatharam and Nayaganwill be screened today at Siri Fort,Audi II.
The next generation is making its mark in cinema and Haasan says he is a proud father. I try my best to stay out of their career choices. Shruti is an independent girl and knows what she is doing. Akshara has recently begun assisting on the sets of Society, he said.
