Taking aggressive steps to turn around cash-strapped Air India in two years, Government said a major revamp of its top management would be carried out in 30 days and there would be a partial disinvestment of the national carrier in the near future.

You will see in the next 30 days a major change in the top management in Air India. You are going to see a major change in the board. Some heads are going to roll.

"We are going to bring high quality people of great integrity and people with a proven track record in business," Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said.

The minister's remarks came amid reports that the national carrier was expecting an estimated loss of about Rs 5,000 crore in the 2008-09 financial year.

Civil aviation ministry sources said at least seven independent directors, who are internationally reputed, would be inducted on the board.

A global advertisement will also be put out for a new chief operating officer for Air India, the sources said. Air India does not have such a post at present.

Apart from revamping the board, Government would go in for ‘partial disinvestment’ of the state-owned carrier in he near future, they said, adding that the plan was to ensure a full turnaround for the carrier in the next 24 months.

Patel had earlier said that the airline could go for issuing Initial Public Offer (IPO) when its financial position as well as the stock market situation is stabilised.

''Vicks vaporub for heart attackBy: jayant | 12-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward It is not the Govt's job to run international airlines!!We are doing it because our political babus -irrespective of party-wants to boss around and steal like in case of many other such white elephants.Privatise it with adequate govt controls will eventually bring the co to better service and profit....Responsibility with accountability is the magic word in management.Changing the top brass alone is not a solution at all.....Even if the best professional in the world is brought to head it,our existing corrupted political system ,commercially ignorant IAS lobby and inefficient union protected staff will make him handicapped....Than going for such cosmetic balms,a major operation is required to save AIR INDIA
Will SirIndia Survie or Sold to private ShortlyBy: Jayasankar | 09-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward it is sad Politicians are responsible for this mess in AirIndia. First Indian Airlines and Air India should not have been Merged. That made a huge loss. Indian Airlines loss was less compared to AIR INDIA.babu's and Congress politicians must shed their mental block and go in for Pulic Issue of Air India to get Money. Then appoint Good and stright forward persons as CMD and Directors . No Interference from Aviation Minstry. WILL ALL THESE HAPPEN?,GOD save the Poor Employee's.
AIR INDIA RevampBy: Muralee | 08-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Let us hope that the Hon.Praful Patel puts his words into action. It is high time the National Carrier gets the benefit of a Professional Management Team instead of Political appointees and nominees run the show for their masters and own interests! The totally inefficient and corrupt workers union should be disciplined along with the reorganization of the management team so that the airline would be run like a People's Carrier instead of Politicians Carrier.
Revamp the PoliticiansBy: Shobha Deodhar | 08-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Revamp all of the Delhi politicians and bureaucrats; then kill Congress, the root of all evil, you have the answer. As an additional precaution, there should be a JEE or such qualifying exam for any one going in for a position in Delhi. It has been made such a bogus place by all of our leaders. I do not know if it is yet curable.
Revamp of Air IndiaBy: Padam Singh | 08-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Some nws papers did mention the possibility of Rattan Tata taking a major part in the revamp of Air India. He had been involved earlier in the 80's but only as a non Excecutive Chairman with no say. In a sense it was only a show pieceGive Rattan Tata the powers of total overhaul, take away bureacratic interference and see the national airline become the pride of India. But will the powers that be allow it?
