Revamp on cards, BJP plans two new regional units

At present, the state BJP has six regional units — Awadh, Paschim, Braj, Kanpur, Gorakhpur and Kashi. The party has proposed to carve out the Bundelkhand unit from Kanpur and Rohilkhand from Paschim.

Sources said state BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai is likely to discuss the proposal with central leaders in Delhi on Monday.

A party leader said the BJP felt the need to create these regional units because Bundelkhand and Rohilkhand have separate identities. In Bundelkhand, the BJP won three Assembly seats and there is rising hope of the party's revival in the region. "When there is a separate regional unit, it will be helpful in developing the organisation and its management keeping in view the particular needs of the region," said the leader.

Sources said that in the proposed Rohilkhand region, the BJP was considering to include districts like Moradabad and some other districts where the party's performance was not up to the mark in the Assembly elections.

Besides creating these new units, the party will also restructure the existing regional committees. The new committees will have 24 members, as against nine till now.

Currently, the regional committees had one president, secretary, organisational secretary, five members and one treasurer. The new committees will have one president, four vice-presidents, four general secretaries, four secretaries, one treasurer and 10 other members. Bajpai confirmed that regional units will be reorganised and new office-bearers of the regional committees would be declared before the formation of the state team.

Bajpai said the new committees will hold certain powers as compared to previous committees, which had been defunct for a long time due to lack of powers. The previous committees were only supervising party programmes in their districts and they had no power to decide their own programmes according to local issues.

"To sharpen the organisation and make it more effective, the party has decided to empower new committees for taking decisions about their areas," Bajpai said.
