In a bid to strengthen the party at the grassroots level in Uttar Pradesh, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is going to reorganise its regional units by creating two new regions — Bundelkhand and Rohilkhand.
At present, the state BJP has six units — Awadh, Paschim, Braj, Kanpur, Gorakhpur and Kashi. It proposes to carve out Bundelkhand from Kanpur and Rohilkhand from Paschim region. Sources said that state BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai is likely to discuss the proposal with leaders in Delhi on Monday.
A BJP leader said that the party felt the need to create these regional units as Bundelkhand and Rohilkhand have their separate identities. In Bundelkhand, the party has won three Assembly seats. "A separate regional unit will help in developing and managing the organisation, keeping in view the needs of the region," said the leader.
Sources in the party said that in the proposed Rohilkhand region, the BJP was likely to include Moradabad and other districts.
Besides creating new units, the party is also going to restructure the existing regional committees. The new committees will have 24 members, as against nine at present.
