My act has me in ghungroos in one sequence and in flamenco shoes the next,” smiles dancer Sharmini Tharmaratnam, when asked about her choreography for ‘Nomads but Maths’, a performance merging the unlikely dance forms of kathak and Flamenco held at Mumbai’s Blue Frog on Sunday. Tharmaratnam learnt Kathak in Delhi for 15 years before leaving for Spain to try learning the flamenco that she says, fascinates her as well. Her unique blend of steps, alternating between traditional kathak and the flighty flamenco makes her choreographies particularly enjoyable. “In my performance I dance Kathak on flamenco beats and do the flamenco to Indian music,” she says. While both dance forms may be rhythm driven, Tharmaratnam uses the differences between them to give her act a more versatile feel. “Flamenco can be aggressive since it’s a direct expression, whereas Kathak is subtle story-telling,” explains Tharmaratnam . Watch out for her performance in Delhi, slated to happen in the next few weeks.
