Rights panel: Probe how inmates fled

The West Bengal Human Rights Commission on Thursday took a suo motu cognizance of the incident in which 11 women inmates of a destitute home in Hooghly went missing on December 30. The commission has issued an order and directed the director of Women and Social Welfare Department to initiate a probe into the matter and submit a detailed report to the commission in two weeks.

"The commission has also instructed the department to probe whether such homes are following the directive of the High Court that was given in 2005 in connection with a case related to the Liluah home in Howrah," said a senior official of WBHRC.

The inmates, aged between 25 and 35, were among the 16 women who were brought to Destitute Home for Females at Uttarpara in Hooghly on November 23 after they were arrested from red light areas in Mumbai. They reportedly escaped on December 30 after breaking the iron window grill of their rooms.
