  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is upset with Research In Mobile (RIM), the company which has developed the Blackberry, for issuing a note to customers saying that the location of data centres is not relevant for security purpose. If RIM doesn’t come out with a proposal to meet security guidelines, then DoT may initiate action against the telecom operators providing services.

In their last meeting with the company’s officials, DoT officials had categorically stated that RIM should install in India servers and requisite equipment to tap emails sent through Blackberry. “The company has not yet communicated anything to us. Whatever we are hearing is only through newspapers,” said a DoT official. “If RIM does not provide any solution acceptable to the government, then we may initiate action against the operators. The action may include a penalty,” said the official.
