The Delhi-Agra highway will soon be widened from four lanes to six, concessionaire Reliance Infrastructure said on Tuesday.

R-Infra has also increased the toll on the highway. The new rates will be applicable from Wednesday.

The widening of road is expected to cost around Rs 2,945 crore, which includes renovation of 16 flyovers, two overpasses, 14 vehicular underpasses, eight bridges on service roads and 10 pedestrian underpasses.

Sudhir R Hoshing, CEO (Roads) at R-Infra, said: "The Delhi-Agra road is part of the Golden Quadrilateral project. Once the widening work is over, the corridor can handle 70,000 vehicles per day, up from 17,000 vehicles per day. The traffic density will double in the next 7 to 8 years."

Officials said all toll plazas on the stretch will also act as emergency response centres. "There will be four patrol cars, ambulance services and a medical centre at the Mathura toll plaza," an official said.

The 180-km long Delhi-Agra highway is R-Infra's 8th road project. The two cities recently got another connecting road, the Yamuna Expressway that was inaugurated on August 9.

"While there is an increase in toll, it is still cheaper than the Yamuna Expressway. The National Highways Authority of India has approved the hike," the official said.
