Rise in email threats, social media offences, say police

These has been a rise in email threats and offences related to social networking websites, according to the Pune police.

Addressing the annual press conference of the Pune police on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Cell) Sanjay Shinde said email threats had increased from 26 in 2011 to 35 in 2012. Also, offences related to social networking sites increased from 55 in 2011 to 60 in 2012, he said. Nine cases of netbanking and credit card-related frauds were also reported in 2012. Shinde blamed the trend on "increased use of smartphones and social media". "There are nearly a thousand social media websites," he said.

According to police figures, cyber crime cases increased from 93 in 2011 to 108 in 2012. The number of arrests too increased from 43 in 2011 to 52 in 2012. Shinde said 390 cyber cafes were checked and action taken against 61 for different violations. Four cases of data theft, one related to job fraud and a case of source code theft were also solved by the cell and the Economic Offences Wing.

Shinde said the sole arrest in the hate videos circulated in the case of attack on Northeast students was made by the Pune police. He said 98 applications of cyber crimes against women were received in the last two years. "There were 200 insecure wi-fi connections in the city in 2011. Only eight such connections were observed in 2012," he said.

Meanwhile, in the last one year, offences affecting the human body have increased by 76, but the number of murders has reduced by one. Attempt to murder cases have increased by eight. The detection rate of murders has improved from 90 per cent in 2011 to 94 in 2012, while property-related offences reduced from 6,426 in 2011 to 5,951 in 2012.
