Rise in email threats, social media offences, say police

There was a decrease in house break-ins in 2012. However, the number of house break-ins in day time increased by 25, while that during nights was down by 190. The detection rate of house break-ins in 2011 was 34 per cent, which came down to 26 per cent in 2012. Vehicle thefts have also reduced from 2,870 in 2011 to 2,604 in 2012. The detection rate in vehicle thefts, too, has decreased from 23 per cent in 2011 to 17 per cent in 2012. The number of other thefts have reduced from 4,704 in 2011 to 4,178 in 2012.

The number of offences related to narcotics substances increased from 87 in 2011 to 94 in 2012. The number of arrests in these cases also increased from 108 in 2011 to 131 in 2012. Brown sugar worth Rs 35 lakh was seized in 2012.

Commissioner Gulabrao Pol, meanwhile, said steps would be taken to strengthen the anti-terrorist cell of the city police. He said special training would be given to policemen attached to the cell.

Complainants, witnesses turn hostile in 2,914 cases, police start court monitoring system

Complainants and witnesses turned hostile in as many as 2,914 cases investigated by the Pune police in 2012. According to the police, of the total 9,305 cases that were cleared, accused in 2,408 cases were convicted in 2012. In the remaining 6,897 cases, 1,717 cases were be cleared because the complainants turned hostile and 1,197 cases were cleared as witnesses turned hostile. Hence, conviction came in only 25.87 per cent of the total cases. Pune police have now started a system to monitor the court trials and investigations of the crimes at different stages. Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjiv Kumar Singhal said the system aimed to increase the conviction rate.
