Delhi’s Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is a hot topic of discussion. At a recent meeting, the Standing Committee on Transport, headed by the CPI(M)’s Sitaram Yechury, questioned the efficacy of such a system in the capital. The panel members, it is learnt, felt a bus-centric project that will eat into Delhi’s road space—already under immense pressure due to exponential vehicular growth—appears a recipe for disaster. The committee has asked the Ministry of Surface Transport to look into the issue despite the latter’s explanation that such projects come under the supervision of the Union Urban Development Ministry.
