Road Block

It is not easy imagining Abbey Road now tucked deep inside the maze of glass, mirrors and granite of DLF Cyber City,Gurgaon.

It is not easy imagining Abbey Road (remember the famous album cover image of John Lennon followed by Ringo Starr,Paul McCartney and George Harrison walking in a single file across a zebra crossing in the UK of the 1960s) now tucked deep inside the maze of glass, mirrors and granite of DLF Cyber City,Gurgaon. But imagining stuff is not too difficult with a Beatles song on your mind; so with a “I’d like to be under the sea,In an octopus’ garden in the shade” buzzing in our heads,we set off for Abbey Road.

After entering the huge office building and looking at the list of companies housed in the floors above us,we find the street-styled European cafe as we turn a corner. The restaurant is airy with brightly coloured doors and posters lining the walls of the restaurant. The rest of the “streetscape” has a few trestle tables on one end and garden chairs of sorts on the other.

The tables are laid out spaciously and the bar is a small white outpost that sits comfortably in a corner. Though the ambience is cheery,it is soon time to switch to another song in our heads. We order a Baked Onion Soup (Rs 145) and a Classical Minestrone (Rs 125) while we try to search for something spectacular on the menu cards. The onion soup arrives with the requisite float of bread and cheese,a wholesome portion, though it is very salty and,for a warm soup, tepid. The minestrone is thick, creamy and loaded, but the synthetic twang at the end of every sip is a dead giveaway that the tomato base was tipped from a can.

For the main course, the Italian salami, chicken ham and mushroom thin crust pizza (Rs 195) is crispy but the toppings don’t come together well. The fish in the Fish and Chips (Rs 345),is fresh and cooked perfectly except for the batter that isn’t crispy enough and doesn’t seem flour-coated. The grilled corn crepes with pink sauce (Rs 255) is gooey and the corn is sweet,a nice balance with the tart sauce, which is not pink, but again tastes a lot like the tomato base of the minestrone.

The food leaves us with time to look around and, though this place may compare with the other European food cafes in the city,it will lure the captive “office lunch time” folks. Sitting here, deep inside this crystal maze of towering office buildings,it is still hard to have dinner with a Genpact or a Wakefield sign winking at us from the distance. Maybe that is why the restaurant has kept the Beatles signboards, the doors and the chequered floors, big and loud.

Back to the food,we pin our hopes on a Lindt dark chocolate cocoa shake (Rs 225) to make us sing “Here comes the sun”,but what we are served is a shade too light and the chocolate shavings sink right to the bottom with disappointment. We are definitely not singing everything is alright.
