FADA urges for periodic inspection & certification of passenger vehicles

The current fitness regime administered and operated by the Government, which is largely manual and subjective, has failed to deliver the desired results for reasons known to all of us,” as S P Shah,President,FADA aired pertinent issues related to the automobile sector at Auto Mall 2010,it became clearer that the government needs to introduce periodic inspection and certification of all passenger cars. “It can be done on the lines of I&C system prevailing in the UK,” pointed Shah adding how in the UK,there are over 19,600 garages that are authorised by MOT to carry out inspection and certification of passenger cars. The current provisions of Motor Vehicles Act/CMVR provides for annual testing of commercial vehicles for emission, road safety and worthiness by RTOs.

“These issues were taken up with Union Minister Kamal Nath and we did propose to him the inclusion of FADA representative in the Committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for reviewing and suggesting changes necessary in the Motor Vehicles Act and Central Motor Vehicle Rules in tune with the current and emerging needs,” Shah’s happy that the Nath has responded positively, and is all set to push a dialogue with other stakeholders for introduction of fitness regime for all categories of vehicles without waiting for the changes in law. “We propose to take up the matter with insurance companies and also IRDA for fitness-linked insurance premium in the interest of clean environment and road safety. A team of FADA members also had a meeting with SIAM to discuss the ways and means of introducing fitness regime for passenger cars,” he informed. Registration of vehicles at automobile dealerships as in force in Delhi,Rajasthan and MP is another major issue taken up by FADA in all earnestness.
