We agree, the eighties were music’s golden years. The period gave birth to some of the best compositions and artists. And as Ondry Paul,Paulus Paul and Chandi plugged into these glory days, they dreamed a dream – of making an equally great piece of music. “With Rahien,we feel we’ve achieved what we’ve been working for all these years,” it’s step one,but the musical trio of city’s Hind rock band,Fire ‘n’ Ice have certainly come a long way. In between concerts, corporate functions, music academy, and work, the three took out time to pen, compose and shoot their first music video ever – Rahien. Directed by Sachin Bhatnagar,up in the cooler climes, the video’s been uploaded on youtube and tuned in quite a huge fan base. “Most of them being our students,” laugh the brothers,Paulus and Ondry. While Ondry teaches music at Mount Carmel and Tender Heart,Paulus touches upon the chords at Eurokids and Gurukul. They both run a music academy in Sector 10 by the name of Paul’s School of Music. But it’s the drummer,Chandi who stands out. Already a veteren in Punjabi music videos,he runs his interior design business with

goes by the name Rishabh Enterprises.

It’s been long since they wrote the song Rahien, and it’s been long since they’ve been planning an album. “It was overdue, hence the video,” Ondry cites the reason for change while Chandi chips in,“well, these days people don’t listen to the music, they watch it!” Five days, nervous attacks and shooting frights later the video was recorded, and uploaded. “Now that we’ve saved our money and taken the risk,we’re planning to cut an album,” tells Paulus. Four songs have already been recorded, there’s one more to go. But is Chandigarh the best place to shoot and record? “Not exactly, the quality is low,but when you have limited finances and record companies strip you off,it makes more sense to produce it on your own,” the three have undertaken quite a challenge of making it on their own for the “industry hesitates in taking a risk with newcomers.”

In a world swept away by electro wave,do we still have takers for Hind rock, for that matter rock? “Of course! People who know rock will never submit to electronic. Rock is a complete form of music with proper guitar, bass and drums whereas electronic is all programmed and restricted,” they speak in self defence. Guess they do make for a strong case. In the meantime, catch their video, with a completely ‘80s retro feel to it,made us hum and tap. All you need to do is type Rahien,Fire ‘n’ Ice on youtube, and play something that’s for,by and of Chandigarh!
