With non-stop rains flooding the region over the last three days, city residents are now being greeted by huge potholes on roads.
While residents rue the poor quality of road material that gets washed away with every downpour, Municipal Council officials said repair work would be undertaken after the monsoon season.
“Even mild showers result in these ugly deep pockmarks on roads every time. With continuous rains, the condition of roads has gone from bad to worse. The potholes have not only made commuting a hassle but also more accident prone,” said Suresh Mehra, a resident of Mansa Devi Complex. He added that the road outside the shop of area councillor Laxmi Devi is also pothole-riddled but no repair work is seen on the roads.
Similar sentiments were echoed by a resident of Sector 12A, Suman Sharma, who said: “The sector roads have been bad throughout the year, but they have turned worse in the last four days. Yesterday, a youth fell into a pothole with his scooter near our house at night and got injured. We have complained to authorities a number of times, but the reply is always the same— it will be done soon.”
Another interesting point that was highlighted was the lack of consensus among councillors. “The councillors have been fighting among themselves without bothering about the welfare of the city. While former municipal president Rawinder Rawal has been removed from his post, acting president BB Singal has been barred from holding any meetings. Under such circumstances, what else can we expect,” added Sharma.
