"He posed as one among the crowd and asked the victim what had happened to her. The woman, who was semi-conscious, pointed at him and told the neighbours to catch him. Anil got scared and fled," a police source said.
The woman's brother said: "I had gone for a wedding to Meerut and my mother was also out. Our father passed away three years ago. Anil used to come often to collect money. We never suspected him."
A case of attempt to rape, attempt to murder, trespass and wrongful confinement has been registered against Anil.
"We traced his location through his phone. We caught one of his friends, Sunny, who was in touch with him. We also made a list of people Anil was close to and raided their houses. He was arrested from his uncle's house," a source said.
During questioning, Anil told police that he was drunk and upset since the woman had turned down his offer to be a friend.
A senior doctor at AIIMS said: "We performed a surgery to repair the injuries in her mouth and the tracheal wounds, where a foreign object had been inserted. Her condition is stable now."
