  • UT Administrator and Punjab Governor General (Retd) S F Rodrigues expressed concern over the functioning of the civic body and the market committee while addressing a public meeting here on Monday.

The Administrator had earlier ordered the constitution of a committee to look into the functioning of MC. The panel, which comprised of councillors Pallav Mukherjee, Chander Mukhi Sharma, former engineer Iqbal Sokhi and industrialist Sanjiv Malik, was later reconstituted after the Ministry of Home Affairs had raised objections.

While Sharma had resigned from the committee following pressure from his party, Malik too was removed from the committee after it was reconstituted.

Apart from Mukherjee and Sokhi, former chief engineer V K Bhardwaj and Additional Commissioner P K Sharma have now been made a part of it. The Administrator said that the committee should now look into the functioning of the MC and submit a report.

He also expressed concern over the functioning of the market committee. The chairman of the committee, Davinder Singh Babla, had recently submitted his resignation, citing interference by the Administration in the functioning of the elected body.

Addressing the gathering, the Administrator said that the JNNURM project should be expedited by procuring more mini AC buses to promote public transport and reduce traffic congestion on the city roads.

General Rodrigues also asked the MC officials to make the slum rehabilitation plan more inclusive to accommodate maximum homeless people from economically weaker sections.

He also asked the home secretary and finance secretary to make the proposed industrial policy more growth oriented, visionary and acceptable to the public.

    ... contd.
