After having spent almost three decades in India, Congress president Sonia Gandhi does not own a house in the country. Nor does she have a car. However, she does have 15 bighas of agricultural land in Sultanpur district worth Rs 2.19 lakh and an ancestral house in Italy worth Rs 18.65 lakh.
These are some of the details from the affidavit filed by the 62-year-old Congress chief with her nomination papers for the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency on Monday. Her son Rahul Gandhi and family friend Satish Sharma accompanied her to the collectorate when she filed her nomination around 12.30 pm.
Sonia’s candidature was proposed by MLAs Ashok Kumar Singh and Raja Ram, as well as Uma Shankar Mishra, the district party president in Rae Bareli, and Shiv Ganesha Lodhi, another senior Congressman.
Following a tradition, Sonia first stopped at the local Congress office in Rae Bareli and performed a “havan”. On her way, crowds welcomed her and showered her with rose petals. After filing her nomination, she visited the tomb of Maulana Ali Mian, another tradition she has been following for long.
Sonia’s assets are worth Rs 1.38 crore, which is around Rs 1 crore less than her son’s assets. Five years ago, her assets were worth Rs 85 lakh, which shows now there is an increase of Rs 53 lakh in their worth. Five years ago, she had Rs 25,000 cash; now it is around Rs 75,000. The worth of her ancestral house has gone up from Rs 12.45 lakh to Rs 18.65 lakh.
