Rs 70 lakh special grant for slums

Special grant of Rs 70 lakh has been sanctioned by the state govt for slums of Panchkula city.

In the Municipal Council budget, nothing was earmarked for slums. At that time,Executive Officer K K Jain reasoned that the slums were on Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) land for non-allocation of funds. Now,a special grant of Rs 70 lakh has been sanctioned by the state government for slums of Panchkula city.

“We are proposing to construct community centres and will provide eight mobile toilets for them. The proposal will be put up in the upcoming Municipal Council meeting,” said Ravinder Rawal,President,Municipal Council. “ There can be more than two community centres. Here they can organise their functions like marriages and other events,” he said.

There is also a proposal to replace all the old street lights on B-roads. “These streetlights are about 25 years old. In the first phase,50 per cent of them will be replaced. Around Rs 2 crore will be spent on this project,” said Rawal.

MC is also planning to buy a high rise ladder for fire station. “HUDA had allowed high-rise buildings. But the fire-stations are ill-equipped to fight fires in these buildings. A proposal to buy a ladder will be put up before the house in the coming meeting.”

A proposal related to land for MC office in Sector 5 will also be raised in the meeting. MC has been running from the community centre of Sector 4 since 2001 as it does not have its own building.

It has been one of the main demand of residents of Sector 4 to get the building vacated so that it could be used for public purposes. In the present budget also,Rs 1.5 core has been set aside for a new MC building.
