RSS workers attack houses of Congmen over anti-Mohan Bhagwat protest

Congress today burnt an effigy of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat over his remarks about women, an act which drew strong reaction from the saffron organisation, whose workers allegedly damaged houses of two leaders of the party, police said.

Congress had organised protests here this morning to condemn the statements made by Bhagwat and Madhya Pradesh Minister Kailash Vijayvarghiya about women in the wake of Delhi gangrape incident.

During the protest, the partymen burnt effigies of Bhagwat and Vijayvarghiya.

However, immediately afterwards, a large number of RSS workers, led by activist Gaurav Randive, stormed into the houses of district president of Youth Congress Pintu Joshi and a local party leader Ravi Verma, pelted stones and damaged the properties, police said.

The situation was brought under control after police cane-charged the protesters, they claimed.

After the incident, FIRs were filed by the two Congress leaders against the RSS activist, who also lodged counter-FIRs with the police, Superintendent of Police (SP, East) O P Tripathi said.

"No arrests have been made in this connection so far and nobody was injured in the incident. The situation is under control," he said.

A delegation of district Congress leaders met the senior police officials over the attack on the party leaders' houses, MP Congress Committee Spokesman Narendra Saluja said.

"In democracy no one can stop the peaceful protests that is a right of any organisation against anarchy, indecent acts and statements," he said.

Saluja alleged that police remained mute spectators to the attack, while Randive told reporters that the Congress' protests had hurt the sentiments of RSS workers.

Mohan Bhagwat, who had stoked a controversy a few days ago saying that rapes do not take place in rural but urban India, had also said that a woman is bound by contract to husband to look after him.
