It used to be pesky salesmen on the phone but now they are pestering you at lunch. I am talking about this new trend in restaurants of collecting feedback from customers. If you haven’t noticed it then look again – it may be that you’ve just been falling in line without even being aware of it.

Of course this is not entirely a new trend. There was always the odd occasion when a waiter sheepishly proffered a printed sheet for you to fill; the sheet with three types of cartoon faces to indicate whether the food and the service was good bad or poor and the mandatory questions regarding contact details and dates of birthdays and anniversaries.

These days however it is not a one-off thing. Anywhere you eat it is likely that you will be handed one of these printed sheets to fill. And likely as not there will be nothing apologetic about the manner in which they are presented; the expectation is that you will fill them out and if you demur, waiters are likely to be aggressively insistent.

It is a baffling phenomenon. There is absolutely no obligation for a customer to provide feedback to a restaurant, particularly after it has just burnt a hole in his or her pocket. At best an establishment can request it as a matter of courtesy or goodwill. I don’t know anyone who likes to sit with a pen in hand filling up a form after he or she has been through a relaxing meal or is in a rush to get somewhere.

    ... contd.

Can Express be a little more selective in thier articlesBy: ajith kumar | 21-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward What is this ? Is this an article that begs a coloumn in one of the popular newspapers in the country. Madam, the fact that there are not many responses to this article is because most of the people find the article silly and do not want to waste time responding to it.Should you feel it is an obtrusion do not go the same restaurant again, more over nobody is telling you that without giving us feeback you cannot leave the restaurant, ofcourse they may insist that you you pay the bill which their right. If you do not want to give them feed back don't but at the same time do not waste the space in the so called National news papers writing about such obscure things. By the way do u work for IE, or are u just another socialite with connections. Mr. Gupta, it is time for you shake up your editorial board, and ensure that such articles do not appear on your paper at least.

If you don't like the article, don't read it, but at the same time, don't waste the space in the so called National news paper writing such obscure comments.Mr. Gupta, it is time to ensure that such frivolous comments do not appear in your paper.

Agree - dont like pushy people....By: Sid | 21-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward I have come across this... but no one has been agressive or insistent. Although I agree with the author in that I dont fill those up.There have been very few restaurants where the manager has come himself and asked if every thing was ok. I think that is a better way of getting feedback.....
