RWAs to knock doors of MLAs over power tariff issue

Fuelled by the Delhi government’s move to allow a CAG audit of power discoms, protests by the city’s Residents’ Welfare Associations against the hike in power tariff have been growing.

Fuelled by the Delhi government’s move to allow a CAG audit of power discoms, protests by the city’s Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs) against the hike in power tariff have been growing. On Sunday, the Delhi RWA Forum organised two meetings,in Jama Masjid area and Paschim Vihar. A day earlier,a ‘mahapanchayat’ of RWAs convened by the United Residents Joint Action held a meeting at Jantar Mantar.

According to Sanjay Kaul, chairperson of URJA,over 350 RWAs passed a unanimous resolution on Saturday on a set of issues that are sure to gain importance in the coming weeks.

“We have agreed that the indication of acceptance of the government for an audit by CAG of discoms’ accounts is tantamount to admitting that the hike is not maintainable until the audit is completed.

“We have also asked for the objections, filed by stakeholders at the public hearings called by DERC,to be revisited and that discoms must withdraw their defence in a case pertaining to their being brought under RTI,for which they have enjoyed a stay order for many years,” he said.

Members of URJA have also initiated a campaign to visit MLAs and seek their ‘vote’ on the power tariff issue.

“RWAs across the city have been asked to form groups of 5 to 10 people and ask MLAs to sign a declaration in support of the RWAs demands for a review on the tariff hike,” said Wing Commander J S Chadda,Convneor of URJA.

“URJA co-ordinators in each assembly segment have been entrusted with convening these groups to visit MLAs. This will indicate who stands where on the issue,” he added.

On Sunday, residents of Jama Masjid area said they would meet Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and MLAs to intervene in the issue at the earliest.

“The sharp increase in the power rates by DERC is not consumer friendly and has added to the woe of public as they were already burdened by price hike of gas and petroleum,” said Syed Mujibur Rahman, president,Aman Committee,Jama Masjid.

He added,“We urge the Delhi government to immediately withdraw this increase to save the general public and businessmen from further trouble.”
