After multiplexes and malls in the city downed their shutters for three days, authorities at the Pune racecourse are mulling over the possibility of having to cancel a few weekend races to curb the spread of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu. However, the final decision will depend on the situation after three days, said Vivek Jain, chairman, marketing committee, Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC).
“As of now, there is no change. But if the situation worsens after three days, we may think of canceling the races for a few weekends. However, we are taking every precaution on personal and organisational levels and I see no reason to panic,” said Jain.
Regarding the precautions taken by the racecourse management, Pradyuman Singh, senior, stipendiary steward, said, “We cannot cancel the races just because of widespread panic, which is harming us more. We have put a notice board, which clearly states the precautions to be taken. Masks, as advised by doctors, are mandatory. The rest depends on how it all shapes up and how far we succeed in fighting it,” said Singh.
Jehan Satarvala, a regular at the racecourse for the past 25 years and the chief executive officer of Jaws Events, feels one can't live in fear and leave all work. "Whenever there will be a race, I will definitely attend it. Moreover, I am looking forward to being part of the Independence Cup race. I was also worried, till I read a mail circulated by the racecourse authorities among all the members that gave clear instructions on the swine flu, putting my fears to rest," he said.
