The Chief judicial Magistrate, Srinagar, today extended the judicial remand of Sabeena, the kingpin of the J-K sex abuse scandal, and Shabir Kala, the alleged pimp, for another fourteen days. The CJM has also remanded the Deputy Superintendent of Police Ashraf Mir for two weeks in judicial custody.
Meanwhile, Additional Advocate General Anil Sethi named by the minor victim is still absconding. ‘‘He didn’t turn up even today,’’ Assistant Solicitor General and CBI counsel Shabir A Naik said.
Earlier, the CBI today completed recording the statement of Sabeena following pressure from the Division Bench of the High court, which had accused CBI of dragging its feet. ‘‘She (Sabeena) is the fountainhead of the scandal. How come you are bypassing her and focusing on the minor victim,’’ Justice B A Kirmani of the Division Bench had observed.
The statement was completed around a month and half after Sabeena’s arrest on April 30. Earlier, the CBI had pleaded that Sabeena was not cooperating with the agency and was putting conditions. Recording of Sabeena’s statement, sources said, will put the CBI on a new trail of people. ‘‘So far, the agency has been concentrating on the statement of the girl victim and the persons named by her were the centre of investigation. Now this will change,’’ said the sources.
J-K High Court is again hearing the case on Friday. On June 6, the Division Bench of the HC monitoring the case had adjourned the hearing for three days after CBI counsel and Additional Solicitor General Amarinder Sharan sought the time for giving a complete report on the investigation so far.
