  • Listen again to Sachin Tendulkar, just after his 175 at Hyderabad: “It was one of my best innings... but in the end it was very disappointing.” In that summation of an exceptional innings, he could be seen to be recalling an entire career in the service of Indian cricket. Twenty years ago, Tendulkar debuted for India and it did not take long for him to understand that he would bear a larger responsibility than should have needed to be his as a 16-year old. At Sialkot, in the last Test of that debut series against Pakistan, he was injured, but he refused to retire hurt. He’d later recall: “It didn’t feel nice, what with blood flowing from my nose, but I couldn’t leave, for the side was not doing well.”

That, then, is the burden Tendulkar has borne: he has not been judged on his performance alone but on whether he managed to take his team to victory. It’s fair. In team sports, great players must be judged by how they remake their squad. For vast stretches of his career, that is how it was with Tendulkar. An emblematic moment in his Test career, therefore, is seen to be the Chennai Test of January 1999. Set a target of 271 by Pakistan to win, an ailing Tendulkar was out on 136, leaving his mates alone to get the remaining 17 runs with three wickets in hand. They did not. The acute consciousness of not seeing his team through was written on Tendulkar’s face on Thursday night. But to see his innings through this narrative would be mistaken.

    ... contd.

Tendulkar does it again!By: weebeewee | 08-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward As on so many occasions before, Tendulkar has once again proved that he has the ability to see India through tough situations, but he will not do so. At the right point of time, he throws his wicket away and says that at the end it was disapppointing... In fact, none of the Indian players put a price on their wickets. All of them except Dhoni offered their wickets to the Australian bowlers / fielders on a platter. And this is a habit we have been seeing for years together now. Another observation is that none of our recognized batsman likes to bat with the tail, which is so important for the tail to earn some confidence and experience!
Tendulkar : True HeroBy: Vijay | 08-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I missed watching the match. Just the numbers however reveal the complete story, of collective failure and rise of a single hero called Tendulkar, the story of Indian cricket. Tendular however, is the hero of world cricket. Only god knows what will happen to cricket after him.
SachinBy: Raj Patel | 07-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Do we need more proof why Australia # 1 Mr. DHONI and others. With less experienced players they can fetch the game from much experienced team and player like Sachin.WE CAN NOT BE #1 unless our all the players including SACHIN, do not have that finer edge of burning enthusiasm to win at any cost keeping cool. Need to realise the importance of singles and doubles. Our players try to play like Sachin when he plays well. How many run outs in two games?? Players do know how to play in this situation but do not play accordingly.
Aussies are AussiesBy: weebeewee | 08-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Very true, Raj. There is no answer to the Aussies in this regard. The best teams have seen to falter against them whatever their team composition. They always seem to have that bit of extra over any other team!
Mr.By: Harish Maru | 07-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Not withstanding the best performance of Sachin Tendulkar at Hyderabad ODI against Australia,it is must be noted that India could have won only because of Sachin and lost also because of his indiscreet shot that got him out when he was the last recognised batsman, run rate was easy to achieve and making 351 against Australia would have made him the star of the world cricket and India one up with huge psychological upper hand.Rightly he looked most embarrassed, when walking back. Such a shot at such a critical moment was not expected from a cricketer of his experience, talent and shrewd understanding of the game. Why blame rookies Jadeja and Patel for mindless run outs?
Mr.By: Sunil | 08-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Poeple blaming Sachin for his "mindless" shot fail to give credit to the bowler who bolwled a superb slower delivery. The back paddle/scoop is a shot which has fetched Sachin tons of runs in his career and also in this match. But the bowler got the better of him. (BTW he was an international bowler and not a galli cricketer)
India Australia ODIBy: Harish | 08-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward For Want of a Nail For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost. For want of a rider the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a horseshoe nail. Ball was good, but unplayable in front of wicket. Shot was played many times but was this the right time.Sachin is no beginner,he is to think like a seasoned player in cruch time and he failed and let the team down. And we have most ingloriously lost the series because of that shot. Sachin was fooled by the bowler like a rookie player.

But for that shot, series would have been alive. player of his experience should have known the risk at that point of time.Ball was good but not a wicket taker.
