SAD to file defamation suit against Delhi govt

The SAD is set to file a defamation suit against the Delhi government for defying Supreme Court orders on holding elections to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) before December 31.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the party core committee presided over Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and attended by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Party spokesperson and advisor to the chief minister, Harcharan Bains, said the party has authorised SAD secretary and legislator Dr Daljit Singh

Cheema to initiate proceedings for filing a defamation suit against the Delhi government "for deliberately defying court orders on DSGMC elections under one flimsy pretext or another".

"The Delhi government first used the revision of electoral rolls as an excuse but the court dismissed it by saying that the rolls should be revised within nine months after the scheduled election," he added.

The Delhi government then had an afterthought and looked for excuses for defying the letter and the spirit of the Supreme Court verdict by stating that it was planning to amend the mode of election of the DSGMC elections, said Bains.

"The court orders had been very specific, calling for elections to be held before December 31 positively and any attempt to sabotage it amounted to an act of grave and unforgivable affront to the highest court in the country," he added.
