Cautioning the international community on not taking any step that may “obstruct” the reconciliation process in Iraq, India today made it clear that it was against the hanging of former Iraq President Saddam Hussein and hoped his life will be “spared.”
Hussein’s death sentence was confirmed by an Iraqi Appeals Court today which said it was up to the government now to choose a day “starting tomorrow” for carrying out the sentence. “After 30 days, it will be an obligation to implement the sentence,” the court official said.
“It is our hope that the sentence will not be carried out and the former President’s life will be spared,” the MEA spokesperson said.
India had on November 5 underlined that any sentence must not appear as “victor’s justice”.
If the sentence is carried out, South Block feels, it is bound to deepen social tension at a time when the Shia-Sunni rivalry threatens to fracture the nation.
