Invoking charges of criminal conspiracy and murder against eight policemen, including two retired officers, the CBI has said the encounter of Sadiq Jamal was "stage-managed" and he was kept in "illegal confinement" by the city crime branch.

Copies of the chargesheet, which was filed on December 22, were given to the accused by the court Saturday.

The CBI has chargesheeted DSP Tarun Barot, Inspectors J G Parmar, I A Saiyed and Kishoresinh Vaghela, Sub-Inspectors Ramji Mavani and Ghanshyamsinh Gohil and constables Ajaypalsingh Yadav and Chhatrasinh Chudasama.

The chargesheet, a copy of which is with The Sunday Express, does not mention former Mumbai journalist Ketan Tirodkar who was the first to be arrested in the case.

Tirodkar had claimed that he had handed over Sadiq to Gujarat police officials. But the chargesheet says the Mumbai Police handed over Sadiq to Barot.

The chargesheet notes how the police chose a secluded area on the outskirts of the city for the encounter. "At about 1:15 am on January 13, Sadiq was shot dead in a stage-managed encounter... Out of a total of 11 bullets fired, five and six rounds respectively (were fired) from their .38 service revolvers by police inspectors J G Parmar and I A Saiyed," it says.

Apart from criminal conspiracy (Sec 120B of IPC) and murder (Sec 302), the eight policemen have also been charged with wrongful confinement (Sec 342) and giving false information regarding an offence committed (Sec 203).
