Sale of energy efficient products like bulbs and air-conditioners have surged in the national capital due to the recent hike in the power prices, industry body Assocham today said.

In its survey, the chamber said due to increase in electricity bills from July 1, households in Delhi are gradually discarding their excessive energy consuming

products.

Out of the 80 dealers and store managers of consumer appliances who participated in the survey, over half said "energy efficient home appliances has witnessed a surge of

about 15-20 per cent".

Recently, the Delhi government has allowed electricity distribution companies to raise the domestic, commercial and industrial power tariff by 24.15 per cent, 19.49 per cent and 20.2 per cent, respectively, it said.

"This move by the DERC is likely to generate significant revenue opportunities for the players in the consumer appliances' sector who of late have been grappling with a double whammy of soaring input cost inflation and rupee depreciation," Assocham secretary general D S Rawat said in a statement here.

Majority of respondents said they have witnessed a huge demand after introduction of power saving appliances as rising power cost are eating into the household budgets.

"The awareness levels of energy efficient products have evolved significantly and the whole concept has worked out both for the companies and the consumers," Rawat said.

It said the light emitting diode (LED) lighting market will replace the conventional lighting services considering that it cuts down power consumption drastically.
