  • Film star Salman Khan was today sentenced to five years in prison by the Jodhpur chief judicial magistrate for killing a chinkara deer on the outskirts of the city nearly eight years ago.

Salman, who was present in the court when the sentence was pronounced by CJM BK Jain, was immediately arrested and sent to the Central Jail. The judgment was announced minutes before closure of the courts today and with tomorrow being a public holiday, Salman will have to spend at least two nights in jail before his lawyers can apply for bail.

The CJM also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the actor. Late tonight, Salman’s mother Salma Khan was admitted to Mumbai’s Leelavati Hospital in “a state of shock”.

The court, which acquitted four others giving them the benefit of doubt, sentenced the chowkidar of the farm house, where the chinkara was allegedly skinned and cooked, to one year in prison. He was immediately granted bail.

Calling the judgment “extremely harsh”, Salman’s lawyer Hastimal Saraswat said they would appeal. “There is no evidence against Salman. We are hopeful that the sessions court will give us relief,” he said.
