Sandwich Day

Call it a Sabor de Soledad withdrawal, but after the final episode of American comedy series 30 Rock aired on NBC, it was incumbent upon us to honour the show's passing. And what better way than to pay a tribute to one of our favorite episodes — Sandwich Day. So duty, and our natural gluttony led us to Edward's in Hauz Khas Village, the ground floor sibling of the cake cartel, Elma's. The place is tiny — with wooden seating, a black wall, a massive candle stand with an equally massive half-melted candle and other accoutrements that lend it an ambience that Edgar Allan Poe would have felt at home in.

All this we see later, as the entry of the restaurant is dominated by a deli counter filled with crumbling cheeses, smoky sausages and serpentine salami. On the side are shelves laden with jars of marinated olives, sundried tomatoes and jams. Now the restaurant's rather mouthy entire name, Edward's Sandwich Bar, Deli and Artisanal Food Shop makes perfect sense.

At our stomach's growling encouragement, we make our way to the counter and study the sandwich menu. Divided into carnivore and grass-eater sections, there are no prizes for guessing which one draws our eye. Though the selection is small, each sandwich is worthy of attention, and most are available in salad versions, essentially sandwiches sans bread.

Our order appears in a short time, served on well-polished wooden boards decorated with a plate containing a couple of pickled vegetables, bowls of grainy mustard, and more importantly, immense sandwiches. The Don Chorizo is as decadent as a Puzo novel, and as impossible to put down. Chunks of spicy Chorizo lie intertwined with leaves of crisp rocket leaves, between boule bread wantonly spread with Feta cheese, making for an extremely adult sandwich.
